Greatham
Church of England Primary School

Mrs Yildirim and the Ecology Club would like to share their exciting news.  on Tuesday 5th July 2011, the Keep Britain Tidy assessor came into school and awarded us the Green Flag Award.  This is the highest award given to schools that are environmentally friendly and we are only the third school primary school in Hartlepool to be given this award.  The school will be given a flag to fly outside school.

Well done Mrs Yildirim and the pupils involved in this achievement!

Ecology Club

Ecology Club is now run by Miss Kerry, on Tuesdays after school from 3.15 to 4.15. The group welcomes children from year 1 to year 6, currently we have no year 6 pupils attending.

Although we work together on everything the children are in different groups, Garden Monitors, Litter Monitors and Energy Monitors.

Topics we have discussed so far,  since the Autumn term started,  are litter picking and keeping our environment clean and tidy. We have also discussed energy and the importance of switching off lights and other electrical appliances,  to save energy.

We have made a beautiful display in the corridor.  The children have sewn and decorated their own bugs and have drawn pictures of creatures of all colours!  Our display also shows captions,  with ideas from the children,  of ways of saving energy in the home. The children have lots of ideas for the Autumn and Winter garden too

The children have weeded one of the main allotment beds. The plan is for them to dig it over completely,  and in the spring to divide the bed with string into 16 square foot plots. This is called square foot gardening.  The idea is to give each child the chance to plant whatever they like,  in their square foot. Whether it  is carrots, cabbage, runner beans, beetroot, parsnips, flowers or a strawberry plant,  they are solely responsible for their plot

The children have planted some trees in the nature garden,  that were kindly donated by the Woodland Trust. They planted Wild Roses, Blackthorn, Cherry Plum, Elder, Hazel and Crab Apple.

We plan to make some Christmas decorations in the last few weeks before we break up for Christmas.

ICT Club

ICT Club is held every Wednesday, for Y5 and Y6 pupils, after school.  It has been running now for the past six years due to the enthusiasm and ingenuity of its members.

The aim of the club is to extend and improve the children’s ICT skills, while at the same time having fun.

All members encourage and help each other,  and everyone’s ideas are listened to.  Finished work is discussed and objectively criticised to see how it could be improved,  next time around.

Since the start of the Autumn term, all members, have produced a poster, which included Word Art, pictures, background, borders, and persuasive text, to advertise our annual Autumn Fair. They have  learnt to use a webcam and an animation programme (I can animate), to produce a short animation, using plasticine models.  The inspiration for their work, was taken from an animation called "Lost and Found". All members will have the opportunity to create a moving Christmas card, which they can email home.

Everyone at the club thinks ICT is GREAT!

Film Club

We are delighted to inform you that we are now running a FILM CLUB, every Wednesday, after school. It will be a chance for our children to experience a variety of films in a safe, happy and structured setting.

What is a FILM CLUB?

Our FILM CLUB aims to make a wide range of films available to young people which challenge, unite, educate, amaze and inspire. Our children will have the opportunity to explore the wonderful world of film and use the FILM CLUB website www.filmclub.org to search for the films they want to watch, submit reviews and enter exciting competitions!

FILMCLUB is a government funded school activity and as part of their work, they sometimes film the clubs, interview the students and publish video material on their website. Occasionally there may be “out of organisation” film crews filming or local/national press taking photographs.

We will show films that are either a U or PG classification, see below. For more details, visit the www.bbfc.co.uk

Film Classifications:

U – Suitable for audiences aged four years and over. Set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror.

PG Parental Guidance – general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children.
