As from 2010, all the children in Key Stage 2 have an entitlement to learning a modern foreign language. At Greatham, French has been taught for the past six years by a qualified French teacher, Mrs Merifield. We use the interactive, on-line scheme of work called Tout-le-Monde which the children can access and enjoy on the Internet at home. Since 2010 the children in Key Stage 1 and the Foundation Stage have also been learning French using songs and games. They love exploring this new language and are learning lots! At this year’s Feast Service in Church, the children in both classes (including the Nursery) sang beautifully in French. On March 8th the whole school took part in a Mardi Gras celebration. Every class made and sampled pancakes and also learned some traditional French country dances or French playground games. All the KS2 pupils took part in a Quiz about Mardi Gras and Shrove Tuesday to highlight the differences between how the day is celebrated in France and in Britain. At the end of the day the whole school assembled in the hall wearing the animal or bird masks that everyone had made and decorated. Then each class performed a dance for the rest of the school and as a grand finale every class paraded to the accompaniment of percussion instruments. There really was a great Carnival atmosphere and the children all enjoyed themselves! Greatham has two French partner schools and we have exchanged videos and letters (most recently about our Mardi Gras) which really brings learning a foreign language to life and gives it real meaning. We really enjoy discovering the language and culture of France and are very lucky at Greatham as our learning is regarded as one of the best primary experiences in Hartlepool.
