| Greatham School has a well equipped hall where
gymnastics and dance are taught. There is also a comprehensive games
skills programme which enables all KS2 children to experience a wide
variety of games including football, netball, tag rugby, Kwick cricket and
rounders. An orienteering course has also been mapped out in the
school grounds which enables children from KS1 through to Y6 to develop
map reading and orienteering skills.
Every child has the opportunity to have swimming lessons at various
times during their school life. Children from Y3/Y4 have lessons termly
whilst Y5/Y6 have swimming lessons in Manor Pool in the second half of the
summer term.
Sports Equipment
Indoor P.E. lessons are undertaken in bare feet. If however, the
child has a foot infection such as veruccas, then gym shoes must be
worn. Pupils require P.E. Kit (shorts, T-shirts or leotard) for
lessons and a track suit is advisable during cold weather as well as
outdoor games shoes. Each child is provided with a P.E. bag
incorporating the school logo and a space for the child's name in which to
keep P.E. kit and gym shoes. A small donation is requested towards
the cost of the bag.
Sporting Aims and Provision of Sport
From the early years, children are taught games skills, simple rules
and correct attitude and behaviour for team sports. Greatham School has a
large field attached which is marked out for football and a playground
which has a netball court marked out.
Within the formal curriculum children spend 45minutes per week on games
activities. The school has entered the local football league.
There are also netball matches played against other schools and the school
also takes part in netball tournaments. Mini tournaments are also
organised with the other Partner Primary Schools of Manor College.
When available the school takes advantage of professional coaches and
specialists from Durham Cricket Club and Hartlepool Football Club and
Football in the Community . Members of the staff hold coaching
qualifications from the FA, Top Sport and Kwick Cricket.
