Greatham
Church of England Primary School

Dates  for your diary at bottom of page.

Today many types of organisation are possible in a primary school.  However, the education philosophy of the staff, design of the building, number of pupils and number of teachers available all combine to limit choices.

At Greatham, considerable attention has been given to achieving the most effective form of organisation to ensure that all of the children’s needs and abilities are met.  Throughout the school week there will be occasions when children may work either individually, in small groups or as a class unit, determined by the nature of tasks they are undertaking.

We have four mixed ability classes into which children are grouped according to age.  One of these classes is for nursery and reception children.  We believe that  the integration of  these two age groups in particular, enables children to develop at their own pace and achieve maximum potential.  A further advantage is that this reduces the stress, which very young children can experience when entering full-time education.  It is important to note however, that this organisation could change if there were to be alterations in pupil numbers or staffing levels.

Class sizes are kept to a minimum.  The number of children in reception class from September 2010 will be 15 and an average of 28 in the other 3 classes of the school.  No KS1 class will have any more than 30 children.
